This 1990 movie was showered with award after award. And perhaps the second half of the movie, which I did not see, warranted those awards. And the opening scene/credits were delightful, and how the director got so many children not to smile is a stroke of artistic genius. If you like really annoying people though, and especially people who have grating laughs and laugh all the time, you might even like the first half of the movie, at least up to the chocolate scene that took me to the stop button in favor of a shower. While Jim Broadbent turns in a creditable performance in the male lead, Randy Quaid might have been a better choice because he looks more like Jim Broadbent than Jim Broadbent does and has a wryer approach to a part that called for a wry approach.
