Lives of Others (2006)

In the tradition of Z, this is an amazingly rivoting movie about the GDR (East Germany) before (and a bit after) the tearing down of the wall and about the human character---good and bad. It's first-class, expertly-done movie in every respect, from the script to the acting to the cinematography to the moral to the tension. It's indescribably compelling. And once you see it, you will understand why Andrea Merkel, who grew up in the GDR, might be so upset with the NSA program and the eavesdropping on her.
