If, as so many of our readers are, you are switching from Outlook to Gmail, and you miss the preview pane as displayed in Outlook, Gmail has a version of it. It's not as good as Outlook's but you might run it up the flagpole and give it a whirl. Go Settings/Lab/Split Screen and hit Enable. Back in Gmail you'll see a new box in the upper-right giving three split screen options: none/vertical/horizontal.
