[Prefatory Note: As this blog has repeatedly warned, it is often unwise to draw conclusions where the sample size is small. The following tips are based on just 2 data points]
With Whole Foods Market eliminating free deliveries (and now charging $9.95), we have recently tried Amazon Fresh, which does free deliveries (for orders of $35 or more plus tip) with 2-hour windows. In several ways, we have found Amazon Fresh to be superior to Whole Foods Market. We were leery that Fresh does not allow for substitutions, but so far they have delivered every ordered item, and one does not have to stay tuned on one's phone while the shopping is done. Second, if you put in the order the day before, you should see plenty of available free-time-slots. You can add to the order until they start shopping, but note that actually will happen a few hours before the delivery time (e.g., nova lox was out of stock last night for my 7am-9am delivery this morning, and while it came back into stock at 4:30 am this morning, they had closed out the order). Third, although careful attention has to be paid, the prices are quite reasonable even before the 5% cash back you get provided you use an Amazon Prime Visa card which we've long recommended. Fourth, Amazon Fresh seems to have items that are not even on the store shelves (e.g., the store has not had banana-strawberry Chobani yogurt on its shelves for the past 6 months but we were able to have it included in both Fresh orders). Fifth, you can eliminate having to keep a shopping list by simply putting stuff into an Amazon Fresh Cart where it will stay until you place the order. The cart is very easy to edit, so you can change the quantities or eliminate items up until you place the order, and as noted, up to some point beyond. Sixth, you can set repeating orders, but you need not because Fresh keeps track of what you've ordered in the past.
