If you don't have an app that will locate your phone or tablet if you lose it, you really should install one, such as Lookout Mobile Security. Usually such an app can locate your device as long as you have some internet connection (e.g., Wi-Fi) or data connection, but to be safe, when traveling, having your GPS on will insure the app can "locate" your device.
