Text of Letter to the NYT: "If the Trump defense were correct that an ex-president may not be convicted upon impeachment and barred from office, then it would follow that any president could avoid impeachment conviction and being barred from office by resigning before there is a vote of conviction. Further, the succeeding president could then name the ex-president as vice-president, and then resign, and the ex-president becomes president again. Obviously, this would be a non-sensical result. While the House Managers’ brief makes a compelling scholarly argument based on the Founding Fathers’ intent when crafting the impeachment provisions, one thing everyone rational person would agree on is that the Founding Fathers were not crazy people and never would have intended their words to lead to or allow non-sensical results."
