The churches have sometimes ducked and sometimes stepped up to the big issues of our times, from civil rights to poverty and wealth imbalance to the Vietnam war to the need to protect the vulnerable from Covid. But as this NYT article explains, they are torn as to what to do when Xmas falls on a Sunday: Do they hold the traditional Xmas day services that some might say commemorates an important birth (perhaps the second most important day in Christianity), or do they cancel services in deference to the reality that most congregants might prefer their family traditions of staying home in their matching pajamas, opening presents, and drinking wassail? Some might be surprised although others will not be that many churches have chosen to cancel this year's Sunday morning's services.
