Seventy-eight (78) years ago, on April 15, Jackie Robinson broke the color line in professional baseball. That was a signal moment for baseball, for sports, and for America. Following that, the military was desegregated and then the public schools. Following that, a politician from Texas was instrumental in the passage of major civil rights and voting rights legislation, and other efforts to lift up and help those less fortunate than others. That history was not without its flaws and shortcomings, but its aspirations were inspirational, and precisely why we should have a government and what a government should be doing. In fine, looking back, and looking at today, it is impossible not to be filled with overwhelming sadness.
