Variable speed pool pumps (or at least two-speed) are required in Arizona and in other states for new installations or replacements of pumps 1 horsepower or greater, aligning with federal regulations that phased out single-speed models for efficiency. While your old pump is grandfathered in, if it breaks, you must replace it with an energy-efficient, multi-speed unit. But here's the really good news: variable speed pool pumps offer substantial energy savings, often 70-90% less than single-speed pumps, significantly cutting electricity costs, with many owners seeing payback in 1-2 years by running at lower, more efficient speeds for longer periods. Savings can be hundreds of dollars annually, recouping the higher upfront cost, and potentially enhanced by utility rebates, while also providing better filtration and quieter operation. In addition, unlike older pumps needing a separate timer, these newer pumps are programmable and include a "quick clean" button so that when chemicals are added, you don't need a separate timer setting to turn off the pump.
