[Prefatory Note: This review, which might or might not appear in The New York Review of Books, is based on the first three episodes of Season 1]
The Good Place certainly is not riveting (it's no Breaking Bad, Justified, or Deadwood) and is not tense (it's not Godless or The Nightwatchman) and is not epic (it's not The Crown). Indeed, it's light, even while it tries to explore a provocative subject, namely, what it means to be good. It produces chuckles at times. Ted Dansen does an adequate job in the co-lead and Kristen Bell, well, she's her always-irresistibly appealing self. One added benefit is that the episodes are just 21 minutes (a 1/2 hour TV show without the commercials) so you can watch a full episode if you don't have much time or you can feel like you really accomplished something by watching three episodes in one sitting.
