Why Watching the Phillies and Eagles Is So Difficult: Coaching Matters

The Phillies and Eagles have great rosters with players that make great plays and don't quit (e.g., the Phillies second game against Atlanta and this catch by Darius Cooper against the Rams). But great players cannot overcome bad coaching and managing (e.g., Mattingly not starting Wheeler in Game 3 when he knew he'd be bringing in Wheeler early and Sirianni not going for a sure field goal on 4th down with under 6 minutes to go to extend the Eagles lead from 10 points (where LA needs just a TD and FG to tie) to 13 points (where LA needs 2 FGs). The problem with bad coaching/managing is that it doesn't just result in loss of a game or a series. It is demoralizing both to the players on the team and the fans who root for them. It creates a corruptive culture and makes it difficult for some fans to recover to do a suitable blog email.
