One of the major drawbacks of EVs is range anxiety. A solution to that is the plug-in hybrid, but in effect your paying for both an EV battery and an ICE, and have all the maintenance issues that ICE vehicles have that pure EVs relieve you of. Coming down the pike is a great solution: a fully electric vehicle with the security blanket of a gas-powered generator to charge the battery, if needed—ensuring you won’t end up stranded as long as a gas station is nearby. Hyundai, Ford, and Jeep parent Stellantis are among the first U.S.-market automakers planning to roll out this new kind of EV which is called an extended-range EV. Unfortunately, from what I can tell, these EREVs will be available only in trucks and large SUVs.
