When we see a movie starring Laura Dern with Will Arnett and written and directed by Bradley Cooper, who also makes an appearance, we look forward to watching it with high hopes. The hopes of half our our critique board were dashed like heads that get crushed like nuts in the people mover doors at Atlanta/Hartsfield International Airport because the doors do not spring back. The other half of our critique board continued watching and, with about 30 minutes to go, said that it is worth seeing primarily because of its two stars, especially Laura Dern. The story is somewhat jumbled and unbelievable in places, but it is overall engaging. It is based on a true one of a British man who, unhappy with his life at middle-age and facing divorce, starts over as a stand-up comedian seeking new purpose in the New York comedy scene. At the same time, his wife confronts sacrifices made for their family, forcing them to navigate co-parenting and identities.
