As Joey Martella's father taught our pitching staff (which I wasn't on but I would listen to him coach them), there is no defense against the walk. That said, here's one pitcher who took that lesson to heart: From 1994 to 2008, Greg Maddux started 496 games and walked 492 batters. Wow!
PS: The Washington National's bullpen has set a record for blown saves (and has many chances to build on that record) and has an ERA of 5.30. Wow!
