Usually when the modem cannot connect to the internet, it is an ISP outage. Sometimes, the modem has gone bad. For most users' internet plans (which are under 400 Mbps and usually are under 150 Mbps), an excellent name brand (e.g., Netgear) can be gotten (the same day as ordered) from Amazon for under $50. It might not be a bad idea to have one on hand which will avoid waiting for (and possibly paying the cost of) an ISP tech to come out and look at your system. Remember, if your internet goes down, you can tether your computer to your phone so that's good, but you won't be able to stream stuff unless you tether your computer (which is another advantage to have a laptop) to your television which is not difficult but which is a pain.
