Golf Commentary

For those who had the misfortune of watching the LPGA's Evian Championship, which made one appreciate even more the The Open Championship performance of Collin Morikawa, there was something to learn. The commentators here, and they are not alone in this, kept yapping about having to have "great imagination" especially around the greens to be able to pull off extremely difficult shots, especially ones that have been left short-sided. Bosh! Here's the real point, applicable both to golf and to life: Imagination is relatively easy (that is, many can see the shot to play) ... it's the execution that is really hard (that is, few can pull it off). This is a lesson that was learned early on by a decent but not great amateur whose imagination (even as a junior junior) could match the best of them but whose execution fell a wee bit short (he also had trouble with distance or, more properly said, lack of distance).
