How to Handle Cox (and Perhaps Other ISP) Outages

When you lose internet connection, it can be a problem with your equipment or with your ISP's equipment. If you get a DNS error message (upon clicking on the Windows 10 internet trouble shooter), it's likely an ISP issue. The problem is that often the first tier ISP techs and the ISP itself are unaware of the outage, and they will put you through a bunch of trouble-shooting stuff for no reason (and it's stuff you can do yourself). I spoke to a supervisor at length after the 3rd Cox outage of the day, pleading that Cox improve its system for identifying outages. She said calling doesn't trigger anything re Cox knowing about the outage. Instead, the only thing that actually triggers reports to the engineering team(s) to look for an outage is scheduling a service call. I give up.

All that said, don't forget you can tether your computer to your phone which will give you internet connection until the outage is fixed. Just plug your phone with a USB cable into your computer, and change your Connections setting so that Tethering is On (and you likely have to turn off your wifi connection). This really works quite well, and your phone actually charges while you are tethered.
