There are several companies that will ship your luggage and other stuff (e.g., golf clubs, skis) for less than it would cost to check them with the airline. Lugless and ShipGo are two of them. Putting aside cost, especially when going on a long trip with lots of luggage or big luggage, there's the convenience of being able to fly with just what you carry on the plane with you.
