Tips on Getting the Best Airfare and Fewest Delays

This Travel+Leisure article explains why booking domestic flights 1-3 months ahead and international flights 2-6 months ahead generally gets you the best fares, why middle of the week and Saturdays often are lower priced, and splitting round-trips into two one-way tickets often saves money. The best time to fly is between 4 am and 7 am when there are hardly any delays, as opposed to 6 pm to 10 pm, when most flight delays occur.
