The athleticism, speed, and abilities of professional football players is something to behold. The biggest drawback and worst aspect of the game is the refereeing. It might be an impossible job, but any way you look it, they do a terrible job and too often their calls are game determinative. The recent US Tennis Open got rid of lines-people, and all the in/out shots were called by AI cameras, and it did wonders for the viewing experience, and was fairer for the players. The challenge for the NFL is not the ability of AI cameras to spot fouls, the challenge is to ignore the fouls that had nothing to do with the outcome of the play. Until such cameras are put in place, the best rule change the NFL could make is that fouls are not to be called where they had no impact on the play.
PS: There is a related problem, beyond the scope of this post, that, in too many instances, the referees make the correct call and impose the correct penalty according to NFL rules. That problem is that some of those rules and some of the penalties make no sense.
